Sorghum and maize are everyday staples, and a wide variety of beans and vegetables are grown. Beef is the most commonly eaten meat in the country, although goat, mutton and chicken are also widely used. River fish are another important ingredient for local dishes, and, as with other Southern African countries, mophane worms are also consumed. Watermelons are said to have originated here, and today the fruit is popular and plentiful, and is used, along with ginger and sugar, to make tasty homemade drinks.

Those with slightly more adventurous taste buds may wish to opt for serobe. This popular dish is made by cooking cow, goat or sheep lungs and intestines until soft, and is usually served with bogobe jwa lerotse - a porridge flavoured by the lerotse melon, which represents another important staple of the country's cuisine.
